Apperances (2005-2008)
We often tend to decipher what a painting before us is trying to reveal. With figurative art, we feel at ease because we do not have to look beyond what is immediately apparent. With abstraction, however, the task becomes more demanding — or rather, it opens up multiple possibilities for arriving at a particular interpretation.
For me, appearances are a collection of visible elements that I present in fragmented form. Yet, through relief and texture, they can be sensed and continue to exist beneath the areas I have chosen to conceal.
I am drawn to the powerful and mysterious meaning a work acquires when part of it is hidden. The fragment, desperately buried beneath the surface, continues to exist nonetheless, while the work presents itself differently to the observer.
This is what transforms the work into an appearance.
